【The Nishie residence's main building and other structures】

The powerful Nishie clan emerged in Fukiya during the late Muromachi period (1336-1573). In 1751, the sixth head of the family, Hyoemon Nishie, founded the Motoyama mine and became rich by producing high-quality bengara as well as its raw ingredient, melanterite.
The main building and other structures are thought to have been built during the Hoei and Shotoku eras (1704-1715). The Nishie family, as the family from which the general headmen of villages in the district were drawn, was allowed to manage one of the shogunal demesnes. The Nishie family residence was also used as the local magistrate’s office. Therefore, extra facilities were added, including a courthouse, a storehouse for rice collected as a land tax, stables and toilet facilities. While some modifications have been made, the structures remain close to their original forms.
